ROADS to Leeds Bradford Airport were impassable when British Airways Concorde made its first visit in 1987. It had been preceded by a visit from the French Concorde in1986.

The picture, from the archives of Aireborough Historical Society, has been viewed more than 8,000 times on the group's facebook page.

Archivist Carlo Harrison said: "Howard German who is a member of the Aireborough Historical Society's Archive Team was on that day in charge of refuelling the aircraft. Howard left his home in Apperley Bridge with over an hour to spare before he was needed on duty. When he reached the Stone Trough in Rawdon the road was simply impassable with parked cars queuing from the airport to see this magnificent aircraft.

"Luckily for Howard, after showing his ID badges and verification a motorcycle policeman escorted him to the airport under a blue light."

Ilkley Council purchases Parish Ghyll Wood for £55 a year over two years. The Council have immediate possession and the land is conveyed on the last payment. The land covers six acres and street making expenses which the vendors have paid in respect to the roads adjoining amount to £500. The present capital value of the purchase price is £750.
