A SPORT-LOVING student from Otley is looking forward to sharing the joys of netball with children in Malawi.

Lucy Peak, 17, who has just finished Year 12 at Prince Henry's Grammar School, is travelling to the African country to volunteer at an orphanage.

Her trip is being supported by a Waye Travelling Scholarship she received from the school's Foundation Governors.

Lucy, a sports prefect, said: "In just over two weeks I will be setting off to Blantyre in Malawi to volunteer at an orphanage called Open Arms.

"I am extremely excited about my travel but also apprehensive of what I am going to face emotionally.

"As a passionate netball player, I'm hoping to introduce netball to all the children at Open Arms."

The bursary, originally donated by the late Douglas Waye – a former chairman of the Foundation Governors and Honorary Citizen of Otley – is awarded to travel-bound sixth form students at Prince Henry's.

The cheque was presented to Lucy by Mr Waye's daughter, Pam Beck, who is the Foundation Governors' secretary, and the chairman, Dr Chris Hatton.
