PROTESTERS will gather outside RAF Menwith Hill this weekend.

The annual Independence from America Day demonstration will take place near the US intelligence-gathering base's main gate from 3pm to 8pm on Saturday.

Organised by the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases, the event will include parking and toilet facilities, a safe area for children, food and drink and entertainment.

A Declaration of Independence from America, led by Janet Russell and Peter Kenyon, will be read out on the day and a copy handed in to the facility.

There will then be speakers, music, singers and comedy, with Leeds stand-up comedian and writer, Maisie Adam, acting as compere.

Speakers will include Marcus Papadopoulis, Michael McGowan and John Bourton, while Catherine Warr will perform protest songs.

Also returning to the demonstration will be renowned veteran folk singer Roy Bailey, whose repertoire of politically-inspired songs have been performed around the world.

East Lancs Clarion Choir, meanwhile, will also be singing songs about the struggle for workers' rights, justice and peace.

Although named as an RAF base, most of Menwith Hill's staff are American and work for the US's National Security Agency.
