CHILDREN in Otley are 'buzzing' after learning more about bees.

The Little Green Frog Nursery decided it was a good time to find out more about the creatures after discovering Carpenter bees nesting underneath its building.

So, owner Ruth Johnson invited Rob Claxton-Ingham, from The Wharfedale Beekeepers Association, to come and talk to the children about the insects and their habits.

She said: "There was no way the bees could be taken to another location because they couldn’t be reached, so if we weren’t prepared to live with, them the only option would be to kill them.

"Bees are very important to our eco-system, and the risk of them stinging the children is very low, so we decided to learn more and enjoy their company."

Laura Bower, one of the nursery practitioners, added: "The children loved Rob’s presentation.

"They saw the inside of a bee hive, learnt about their life cycle, tasted honey and even learnt how bees communicate by doing a 'waggle dance'."
