AN OTLEY street is to get a facelift and will be made safer for pedestrians.

The work will be carried out at Ratten Row - now more commonly known as Mercury Row.

Otley and Yeadon councillor Colin Campbell said:"About five years ago my colleagues Cllrs Lay, Downes and I put in a bid to the Local Centres Fund to improve pedestrian facilities on Mercury Row / New Market / Bondgate. After a great deal of discussion and a delay caused by Covid Leeds have finally signed off on the project.

He added: "The plans are to resurface Mercury Row and the adjoining part of Bondgate to make it easier walking for pedestrians.

"The plans also include a couple of Copenhagen style crossings on the Bondgate and Crossgate junctions with Mercury Row. These are designed to provide a level crossing point to assist pedestrians and wheel chair users. The crossings make it clear that pedestrians have right of way and are also designed to discourage inconsiderate motorists from using the road as a short cut."

Cllr Lay said:"It is important to help create a pleasant atmosphere for shoppers. Improving the pedestrian experience in the historic heart of the town makes things better for locals and visitors."
