Exciting opportunities at Leeds Bradford International Airport

Assessment dates for these fulfilling positions are rapidly approaching, with the first taking place on Wednesday 15th November and the next round on Tuesday 19th November. We spoke to Kate Spink, talent acquisition manager at Leeds Bradford International Airport, about the important role that Aviation Security Officers play in the daily life of the airport. 

First line of defence 

Security is the most crucial aspect of an airport – the safety of customers and staff is the paramount priority above all others. To meet the rigorous standards of international travel safety, Aviation Security Officers receive top-of-the-line training from the most experienced instructors in the industry. 

Kate tells us: “To prepare for undertaking this role, candidates will undergo a six-week training period. During the first two weeks, candidates will learn in a full classroom environment with our trainers. As a full-time endeavour, the full-time hourly rate of £11.10 will be paid to all candidates. 

“After completing the classroom training, candidates will spend a further two weeks completing on the job training – putting everything learnt in the classroom into practice in a safe learning environment. The final part of the training involves shadowing security officers during a shift, enabling candidates to perfect their skills in front of customers.” 

Approachable and empathetic 

Despite the emphasis on maintaining high levels of security, there is far more to being an Aviation Security Officer. Compassion and empathy are fundamental characteristics of this customer-facing position, as you’ll be assisting customers during their safety journey and ensuring that customer service standards are upheld at all times. 

“There is a misconception that being an Aviation Security Officer is an out and out security role, in which an assertion of authority is an expectation. This can often be misconstrued as a lack of compassion and empathy – two vital aspects of this position. 

“They are very often the first staff members that our customers will meet during their holiday experience, and our officers need to uphold our values of One Team, Do the Right Thing and Be the Best. 

“We need people who can display a first-class customer service outlook from the start to the end of their shift. An eye for detail, as well as an attentive and professional attitude are key characteristics for this role.” 

Responsibilities and eligibility 

Every day at Leeds Bradford International Airport brings fresh challenges and opportunities. Aviation Security Officer’s play a crucial role in ensuring that travellers remain safe at all times. Undertaking regular patrols of the airport terminals and grounds, carrying out effective searches of baggage and people, and dealing with on-site security incidents are fundamental aspects of the job. 

Remaining vigilant at all times and maintain your physical fitness will be crucial to your success as an Aviation Security Officer. Kate adds: “Our Security Officers are required to have full colour vision and the capability to perform a wide range of duties.  

“The ability to read, write and speak fluent English is essential whilst other language skills are desirable. You must have lived in the UK for at least five years and have a five-year work history, unless you have been in education.”
