BURLEY have achieved their first Chappell Cup triumph in emphatic fashion.
With it having rained until lunch-time on Bank Holiday Monday, Burley won the toss and invited Steeton to bat in the third-team knockout competition at Green Lane.
Hayden Tennant (37) and Aatif Modak (18) put on 43 for the first wicket before the latter was caught and bowled by Danny Gill, who took 2-35 in his eight overs.
Steeton then lost wickets cheaply until they were 83-4 before Bradley Akrigg (22) and Ryan Birch (42no) put on 43 for the fifth wicket, with the innings closing at 149-6 after their 40 overs, enthusiastic fielding being capped by fine catches from Gill and skipper Nick Day.
Having used seven bowlers, however, Burley didn't need as many batsmen as man of the match Day (93) and Danny Revis (44) put on 114 for the first wicket before the latter was bowled by Oliver Myers.
But that was Steeton's only success as Burley marched to a nine-wicket victory in the 32nd over, Day following on from his 90 not out in their semi-final victory over Rawdon.
Trophies were presented by Aire-Wharfe League president Mike Hibbert and the match was sponsored by Kath Whittaker in memory of her father Edmund Bush, who was a great supporter of local cricket.
