SHAYAN Siraj returned from the Lithuania Cadet Open with a singles silver medal.
The 14-year-old from Bramhope was part of a six-strong England boys’ contingent at the event and he defeated two of his team-mates on the way to the final.
Having qualified in second place in his group, he beat Jonny McMullan 3-2 (4-11, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8) in the last 16 and then James Smith 3-1 (11-7, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6) in the quarter-finals.
That set up a semi-final against Ukraine’s Anton Limonov and Siraj again won in a decider (6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8).
Another Ukrainian awaited in the final in the shape of Volodymyr Lushnikov, who had beaten Siraj in the group stage.
Again it went the distance, but Siraj was beaten 3-2 (14-12, 9-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-9).
In the team event, Siraj featured alongside McMullan as England B and the pair got through the group stage to reach the quarter-finals, where they lost 3-0 to Ukraine.
